MACCC Weekend Roundup: January 8
JACKSON, Miss. – Happy New Year! The MACCC men's and women's basketball season is in full swing, but that doesn't mean the MACCC's member institutions aren't making headlines off the court.

Will Verdung named MSBCA JUCO Player of the Year
FULTON, Miss. – Former ICC baseball star Will Verdung was recently named the 2023 Mississippi Baseball Coaches Association (MSBCA) JUCO Player of the Year.
In his sophomore season, Verdung (Corinth) led the Indians in seven offensive categories with a .389 batting average, .484 on-base percentage, .706 slugging percentage, 70 hits, 65 RBI, 32 walks and 15 home runs, which put him in a four-way tie for single season home runs since 2006 with Tyreque Reed (2017), Dustin Lunn (2009) and Josh Graham (2006).
Meet The Teams scheduled for Jan. 10
PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast will hold its spring semester Meet The Teams event Jan. 10 at Dantzler Arena.
The event will start at 6 p.m. with the Bulldogs' baseball, softball, golf and tennis teams being introduced. The Cheerleaders and Perkettes will also take center stage as their sendoff before heading to their national championships.
The Perkinston Campus bookstore will be open until 6:30 for fans to stop by and pick up Gulf Coast gear.
Monterio Hunt Selected for HBCU Legacy Bowl
NEW ORLEANS - Northwest alumnus and current Alcorn State receiver Monterio Hunt has been chosen to participate in the Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl, presented by the Black College Football Hall of Fame.
Hunt was selected along with several other players from HBCU institutions from across the nation. The Walnut native is the first Ranger to participate in the all-star showcase since its inception in 2022.
In his three-year career with Alcorn State, Hunt hauled in 64 passes for 1,217 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging nearly 21 yards per catch. In the past two seasons, he has played in 22 games for the Braves and hauled in 37 catches this season for 633 yards and four touchdowns.
