Bobcats claim another Region 23 Championship

ELLISVILLE (JCBobcats.com) – The dynasty continues.
 
Top-seed Jones College beat No. 2 seed Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College 5-0 to capture its fifth straight NJCAA Women's Region 23 Championship at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
 
The Bobcats posted three 5-0 wins in the tournament, defeating East Central, Northwest and MGCCC.
 
Jones is now 16-0 and will advance to the NJCAA Division I Tournament in Tyler, Texas, May 3-7. The Bobcats will be making their 21st national tournament appearance.
 
The Bulldogs are now 12-2 with both losses coming to Jones.
 
The Bobcats posted three victories in doubles to open play in the finals.
 
Helen Hernandez and Molly Bennett beat Danique Vermue and Valeria Callejo in No. 1 doubles, 8-4. Theresa Emelio and Maria Martinez defeated Isona Arnaus and Lauren Sullivan in No. 2 doubles, 8-5, and Ansley Tomkins and Josie Tullos edged Mikenzy Dubrow and Dallas Tanner in No. 3 doubles, 8-6.
 
Hernandez blanked Vermue in No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Tomkins clinched the title with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Karla Bethea.
 
Jones will play its final regular season match at 1 p.m. Thursday at Wallace State-Hanceville.
 
Meridian shut out Northwest 5-0 in the consolation match and joins Jones and MGCCC as national tournament qualifiers.
