
Wolves Split Doubleheader with Bears
SUMMIT – The Co-Lin Baseball team hit the road for a doubleheader against Southwest Mississippi on Thursday, February 13. The Wolves and Bears split the games with the Bears taking game one, 6-1, while the Wolves bounced back with a 7-1 win in game two.
GAME ONE
The Bears jumped ahead of the Wolves early as they held them scoreless in the top of the first and then scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Wolves then got the first batter on base in both the second and third innings, but three straight outs followed in each inning to keep the deficit at 2-0.
The Bears then added four runs in the bottom of the third inning to increase their lead to 6-0. The Wolves then got the leadoff batter on base for the third straight inning in the top of the fourth but pop out followed by a double play left the runner stranded and the deficit at 6-0.
After a scoreless bottom of the fourth, the Wolves scored their lone run of the game in the top of the fifth as Reise Thomas (Florence) hit a one-out single to get the offense going. Donovan Moore (Bude) then drew a walk to put two runners on with one out. Later in the inning, Trey Davidson (Brandon) delivered a two-out, RBI-single scoring Moore and making the lead 6-1. However, the rally was cut short after an inning ending strikeout.
The Bears continued to stifle the Wolves offense as they allowed three baserunners in the final two innings, but no runs came across to seal the 6-1 win.
The Wolves totaled six hits as a team with Caleb Brooks (Brandon) leading the team with two while Davidson, Moore, Thomas, and Gavin Bledsoe (Brandon) had one hit each. Davidson had the lone RBI of the game for the Wolves.
Parker Ishee (Ridgeland) got the start and took the loss for the Wolves (1-1) while pitching 2.2 innings and allowing six runs, five earned, on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Carter Leggett (Laurel) pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing one hit with two walks and one strikeout. Darrin Robbins (Sumrall) and Lane Robertson (Columbia) pitched one inning of relief each both allowing one hit while Robertson also had one walk and one strikeout.
GAME TWO
The second game of the doubleheader once again saw the Bears take an early lead with a single run in the bottom of the first. However, that would be the only run the Bears scored as the Wolves scored seven unanswered runs over the final six innings starting with a solo run in the top of the third.
Moore drew a walk while Brooks was hit-by-pitch to put two runners on with one out. After the Wolves pulled off a double steal, Moore tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Davidson making the score, 1-1.
The Wolves then blew the game open with four runs in the fourth inning as Dylan Wesson (Brandon) hit a leadoff single to get the inning started. Wesson then took second on a sacrifice bunt by Bledsoe and took third on a groundout by Brady White (Ethel). Wesson then scored on two-out, RBI single by Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead while Griffin then scored on an RBI triple by Thomas to make the score, 3-1. Moore then drew a walk to put two runners on with two outs. Moore then stole second while an error on the play allowed Thomas to score making the score, 4-1. Brooks then reached base on an error while Moore scored from second on the play to increase the lead to 5-1.
The Bears then got two baserunners on with two outs in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Wolves got out of both jams with no runs crossing the plate. The final two runs for the Wolves came in the top of the sixth as Avery Griffin drew a leadoff walk and then stole second. Thomas delivered an RBI single scoring Griffin while Thomas advanced to second on the play. After Thomas reached third on a passed ball, Moore drew a walk to put two runners on with no outs. Brooks then reached on a fielder's choice scoring Thomas and increasing the Wolves lead to 7-1.
The Wolves then stalled the Bears offense allowing one runner on with one out in the sixth and seventh innings, but no runs scored securing the 7-1 victory for the Wolves.
The Wolves totaled six hits in the game as Thomas led the way with two hits while Moore, Wesson, Bledsoe, and Avery Griffin had one hit each. Thomas also led the Wolves in RBIs with two with Brooks, Avery Griffin, and Trey Davidson adding one RBI each.
Jennings Kimbrell (Flowood) got the start and improved to 3-0 with the win while pitching six innings and allowing one earned run on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Judson Griffin (Brookhaven) pitched one inning of scoreless and hitless relief with one walk and one strikeout.
Co-Lin is now 9-2 overall and will return to action to face off against Nunez Community College on Saturday, February 15. First pitch between the Wolves and the Pelicans is set for Noon at Noel Suarez Stadium in Chalmette, Louisiana.
