Bulldog arms power sweep of Rangers
PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast pitchers held Northwest Mississippi hitters to seven hits Saturday on the way to a sweep at Ken "Curly" Farris Field.
The Bulldogs won the first game 12-1 in seven innings behind a seven-strikeout complete game by Eli Waters, and James Vines (Fr, Clinton, La./Silliman Institute) struck out nine in six innings of a 4-1 win.
"It's easy to coach when they pitch like that," Gulf Coast coach Zach Allen said. "That's two great starts where they just go in and pound the zone. It's easy to run an offense when your pitchers are doing that."
The Bulldogs improved to 30-14 overall and 12-6 in the MACCC, matching their conference win total from 2024 with 10 games left in the regular season. They maintained their hold on fifth place, with the top six teams advancing to the twin regionals. Teams in seventh through 10th place have to take part in play-in games.
Waters (So, Petal/Petal) improved to 6-3 with another dominating performance. He allowed just four hits, blanking the Rangers (26-15, 9-11) until one out in the seventh. The game was shortened to seven innings by the MACCC run rule.
Dom Jackson (So, Gulf Breeze, Fla./Gulf Breeze) had the big hit, his league-leading 11th home run. The three-run line drive to right made it 5-0 in the second.
Keilon Parnell (So., Pascagoula/Pascagoula) had a two-run double, and Naji Cain (Fr, Columbia/Columbia) had two hits. Gulf Coast had only seven hits but took advantage of eight walks and four hit batsmen.
Vines (Fr, Clinton, La./Silliman Institute) allowed a leadoff single, then erased him on a double play. He retired the next 16 in a row before a leadoff single in the seventh. Walker Seaman (Fr, Grand Bay, Ala./Mobile Christian) got the last three outs to sew up the win.
Vines didn't walk a batter to improve to 5-1.
Kaden Irving (So, Gautier/Gautier) went 3-for-3 with a colossal two-run home run well over the hitter's eye in dead center field.
"That ball was probably one of the furthest balls I've ever seen hit," Allen said. "He was really locked into that. I think he had a double and a single of those, and he hit a lot of balls hard today. He's been working hard."
Gulf Coast travels to archrival Pearl River on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m., and it's the first of three straight road doubleheaders.
