Indians split home opener with Snead State

Indians split home opener with Snead State

Fulton, Miss. – After having the season opener cut to only one game, Itawamba Community College baseball played their first doubleheader this season and split with Snead State Community College dropping game one 12-8, and winning game two 14-6.

Game 1: Parsons 12, Indians 8

The Indians (2-1) led for the first five frames, but the Parsons took advantage of hit batters and walks to score eight runs in the sixth and cruise to the victory.

After five innings, the Indians led 7-4 but three walks, two hit batters and four hits later, they trailed by five runs. They would get one run back in the bottom of the seventh on a Bo Rock (Amory) double but were unable to overcome the deficit.

Prior to the Parson's big inning, the Indians help a 5-1 lead after three inning with big hits from Drew Capobianco (Saltillo), who went 3-for-4, and Gray Bane (Olive Branch).

A Will Verdung (Corinth) two-run home run in the fifth gave the Indians a 7-4 lead in the fifth after the Parsons had cut the lead to one, 5-4, in the top of the frame.

Game 2: Indians 14, Parsons 6

One big inning hurt the Indians in game one, but in game two, they benefitted from two big innings on their way to the 14-6 win to earn the split.

The Indians overcame and early two run deficit by scoring seven runs in the third and six runs in the fifth.

Run-scoring singles by Capobianco and Verdung tied the game a 2-2 in the bottom of the third, and a bases loaded walk by Stone Collier (Fulton), put the Indians in the lead.

Dre McCray (Water Valley) quickly extended the lead with a line drive grand slam to left center to cap off the seven inning frame.

The Parsons cut the lead to one run, 7-6 after back-to-back two-run frames in the fourth and fifth, but a three-run double by Jaxin Settlemires (Kossuth) stretched the Indians lead out to 10-6 in the bottom of the fifth.

Capobianco added a run with a RBI single and Matthew Martinolich (Ellisville) followed with a two-run home run top put the Indians up 13-6.

Coleman Haltom (Olive Branch) shut down the Parsons in the final two innings as he struck out five of the seven batters he faced.

A solo home run by Bane capped off the Indians' scoring as they picked up the game two win and the split.

The Indians will travel to Bevill State Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at Noon in Fayette, Ala.
