
Wolves Drop Doubleheader Against Pelicans
CHALMETTE, La. – The Co-Lin Baseball team took to the road to face off against Nunez on Saturday, February 15. The Pelicans swept the doubleheader taking a slugfest in game one, 19-16, and game two, 15-6.
GAME ONE
The offensive fireworks started early in this game as the Wolves scored two runs in the top of the first as Donovan Moore (Bude) hit a leadoff single to get the offense going. Later in the inning, Trey Davidson took one swing of the bat to put runs on the board as he crushed the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a two-run home run giving the Wolves an early 2-0 lead. However, the Pelicans responded with a three-run home run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Pelicans then added five more runs including two of a home run in the bottom of the second to increase the lead to 8-2.
The Wolves offense continued to stall against the Pelicans as they added two more runs in the bottom of the third making the score, 10-2, while a leadoff solo home run in the fourth increased the lead to 11-2. However, the Wolves responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth as Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) out a one-out double to start the offense and then advanced to third on a double by Reise Thomas (Florence). Griffin then scored on an RBI groundout by Moore while Thomas scored on a two-out RBI single by Tucker Jones (Brandon) cutting the lead down to 11-4.
The Pelicans responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning running their lead back to nine runs at 13-4. The Wolves then answered with a big inning as they scratched across four runs in the sixth starting with back-to-back walks for Caleb Brooks (Brandon) and Gavin Bledsoe (Brandon). Back-to-back RBI singles by Evan Holifield (Stringer) and Sam Cook (Shubuta) scored Brooks and Bledsoe respectively while cutting the lead down to 13-6. A third straight single by Griffin loaded the bases with no outs while a fourth consecutive single off the bat of Thomas scored Holifield. Later in the inning, Cook scored as Jones reached on a fielder's choice making the score, 13-8.
The Pelicans then took advantage of a double and three straight walks, one intentionally, to plate a run and extend their lead to 14-8. The Wolves wasted no time with a response as they scored three runs in the seventh with Bledsoe leading off the inning being hit-by-pitch. Bledsoe then advanced to second on a single by Holifield while both then scored as Cook smashed a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for a three-run home run cutting the lead down to 14-11.
After holding the Pelicans scoreless, the Wolves scored four runs in the top of the eighth to take the lead as Brooks hit a leadoff single to start the inning. After Brooks was caught stealing, Bledsoe was hit-by-pitch for the second straight plate appearance while Holifield and Cook were also hit-by-pitch to load the bases with one out. Bledsoe then scored as Avery Griffin reached on a fielder's choice while Cook was forced out on the play making the score, 14-12. Thomas then stepped up and delivered on the first pitch he saw as he drove the ball over the left field fence for a three-run home run to give the Wolves a 15-14 lead. The Wolves then held the Pelicans scoreless for the second straight inning and added a run to their lead in the top of the ninth as Davidson reached base on an error with one out on the board. Davidson then advanced to third on a double by Brooks and scored on a sacrifice by Bledsoe increasing the lead to 16-14. The Pelicans then responded by cutting the lead down to one with leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the ninth followed by a walk. After a pop out put one out on the board, the Pelicans drew back-to-back walks and then hit a walk-off grand slam to win the game, 19-16.
The Wolves totaled 15 hits as Reise Thomas led the way with three hits while Donovan Moore, Caleb Brooks, Evan Holifield, Sam Cook, and Avery Griffin had two hits apiece with Tucker Jones and Trey Davidson adding one hit each. Thomas and Cook led the Wolves in RBIs with four each while Jones and Davidson had two RBIs each with Moore, Bledsoe, Holifield, and Griffin adding one RBI each.
Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) got the start for the Wolves and picked up a no decision while pitching 1.2 innings allowing eight runs, four earned, on five hits with two walks. Cohen Weinhofer (Ocean Springs) pitched 2.1 innings of relief allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts while Darrin Robbins (Sumrall) pitched one inning of relief allowing two runs, both earned, on three hits with one strikeout and Cameron Patterson (Central, LA) pitched 0.2 innings of relief allowing one earned run on one hit with three walks and one strikeout. Jacob Buffalo (Foxworth) took the loss (0-1) in relief while pitching 2.2 innings and allowing three runs, all earned, on one hit with three walks and two strikeouts. Nash Sturdivant (Brandon) also pitched in relief allowing two runs, both earned, on one hit with one walk.
GAME TWO
The second game of the doubleheader got off to a similar start for the Wolves as they plated three runs in the top of the first inning with Donovan Moore hitting a leadoff single to start the game. Tucker Jones then stepped up and crushed an 0-1 pitch over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead. Gavin Bledsoe then extended the inning by drawing a two-out walk, advanced to second on a single by Reise Thomas, and then scored on an RBI single Sam Cook to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Wolves added to the lead with a single run in the top of the second as Avery Griffin hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a one-out single by Jones and then scored on an RBI groundout by Trey Davidson making the score, 4-0. The Wolves added two more runs in the top of the third as Bledsoe drew a leadoff walk to get the offense going. Reise Thomas then took one swing of the bat and crushed a 2-1 pitch over the center field fence for a two-run home run to increase the Wolves lead to 6-0.
The Pelicans then began chipping away at the Wolves lead starting with a three-run home run in the bottom of the third to cut the lead down to 6-3. The Pelicans then used two home runs in the bottom of the fourth to score three runs and tie the game at 6-6. The Pelicans then took a commanding lead scoring five runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth to make the score 15-6. The Pelicans stalled the Wolves offense throughout the final three innings allowing just one baserunner in each inning while keeping the Wolves off the board to seal the 15-6 win.
The Wolves totaled 13 hits as Avery Griffin led the team with three hits while Donovan Moore, Tucker Jones, Trey Davidson, and Reise Thomas had two hits apiece with Sam Cook and Evan Holifield adding one hit each. Jones and Thomas led the Wolves in RBIs with two apiece while Davidson and Cook had one RBI each.
Wes White (Flowood) got the start and fell to 1-2 with the loss while pitching four innings and allowing seven runs, all earned, on four hits with five walks and five strikeouts. Carter Leggett (Laurel) made a relief appearance but failed to record an out while allowing four runs, three earned, on two hits with one walk while Lane Robertson (Columbia) pitched 1.2 innings of relief while allowing four runs, all earned, on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts with Tanner Blackwell (Flora) pitching 0.1 innings and striking out the only batter he faced.
Co-Lin is now 9-4 overall and will return to action on the road at Mississippi Delta on Tuesday, February 18. The doubleheader between the Wolves and Trojans starts at 11 a.m., in Moorhead.
