Brown’s 2 goals grab another MGCCC W

Playing its third grueling game in six days on a sloppy field, Mississippi Gulf Coast got a key women's soccer win Monday at Summit.

Katie Brown (Fr., Picayune/Home School) scored twice, with Alyssa Palisi (Fr., Diamondhead/Hancock) assisting on both and picking up a marker of her own in a 3-0 shutout of Southwest Mississippi.

"Considering the circumstances, to pull out a 3-0 win was a good job by our team," Gulf Coast coach Jackie Rhodes said. "We were able to play a lot of people and give some folks some rest. At the end of the day, we'll move forward to the big game against Pearl River."

The Bulldogs (7-4-1, 6-2-1 MACCC South) need just a win or tie against PRCC on Friday to clinch second in the division, assuming the Wildcats beat winless Copiah-Lincoln on Tuesday. That would earn them the right to host an MACCC Tournament game on May 18 against the No. 3 team from the North.

Brown and Palisi reversed their usual roles on Monday. Palisi set up Brown in the 39th minute, and again in the 61st. Brown has eight goals to go with her league-best nine assists.

"Katie's a playmaker," Rhodes said. "She'd rather be the assister than the scorer, so to have her go out there and score two goals with A.P. being able to assist her, it was really nice to see. As long as Katie keeps making plays for us, we have a chance to keep winning games."

Hannah Salter (Fr., Olive Branch/Lewisburg) picked up her fifth assist on Palisi's MACCC-best 11th goal.

Gulf Coast will kick off against Pearl River at 5 p.m. on Friday. The pivotal game will be played at Bary Thrash Field in Perkinston.
