Bulldogs can’t grab split vs. No. 5 Jones

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast put a scare in No. 5 Jones late in Tuesday's doubleheader but couldn't close out a comeback.

The Bulldogs scored three times in the seventh at Ross-Smith Field but couldn't push the tying run across in a 9-8 loss. Jones won the first game 8-3.

Grace Allgood (So., Hurley/East Central) and Kristian Jones (So., Southaven/DeSoto Central) led off the inning with singles, and Breanna Green (So., Saraland, Ala./Saraland) took a pitch off the helmet to load the bases.

Allgood scored on a wild pitch before K.K. Agner (So., Horn Lake/Magnolia Heights) made it 9-7 with an RBI single. Emaleigh Coates (So., Lucedale/George County) did likewise, and Gulf Coast had two on and nobody out down a run.

Abbott Stafford (So., Glenmora, La./Glenmora) coaxed a one-out walk to load the bases, but the Bulldogs couldn't get the game tied up.

Coates blasted a ball over the batter's eye in center field to open the scoring in the second, and Abby Vance (So., Calhoun City/Calhoun City) had an RBI single.

Jones (28-7, 16-2 MACCC) scored six times in the fourth to take the lead, but the Bulldogs immediately clawed three back. Agner and Jovi Jones (Fr., Batesville/Magnolia Heights) singled with one out before a pair of two-out errors let three runs score.

Jones added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to set up the thrilling ending.

In Game 1, Vance and Darcy Novak (So., Hurley/East Central) had RBI singles in the fourth. Agner clubbed her 10th homer of the season in the seventh.

Gulf Coast will head to Goodman for a doubleheader against Holmes scheduled for Friday. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m., but the schedule may change to dodge bad weather.
