MOORHEAD – The Mississippi Delta Community College baseball team will return to action on Saturday, traveling to Wesson to face Copiah-Lincoln Community College in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
The Trojans have won three conference games in the last two weeks, and here is the latest in MDCC baseball:
MDCC vs. EAST CENTRAL, 3/20/21
Delta played host to East Central Community College on Saturday in Moorhead, but was unable to come away with a victory, as the conference leading Warriors left town with a 16-5 win in game one and a 7-1 victory in game two.
Carson Chapman (Flowood) had three hits, including a double, in the opener to lead MDCC. Julian Murphy (Ridgeland) added two hits and a run scored. Landon Comer (Wellington, Ala.) was charged with the loss on the mound.
In game two, Riggs Easterling (Shreveport, La.) chipped in with a double and run scored to pace the offensive attack. Haden Luke (Vicksburg) was credited with the loss in the nightcap.
MDCC vs. HOLMES, 3/18/21
MDCC hosted Holmes Community College on March 18 and left the ballpark with a crucial two-game sweep of the Bulldogs after winning game one, 6-2, and game two, 13-5.
Chapman and Gage Little (Duck Hill) each had three hits in the first game, with Chapman adding an RBI and Little scoring two runs. Eli Stallings (Boyle) was a perfect 2-2 with two RBI and a run scored as well.
Patrick Martin (Brandon) was stellar on the mound in game one, as the righthander went 5.1 innings and finished with four strikeouts and only two runs allowed to earn the win. Casey Burge (Lumberton) was fantastic in relief, twirling 3.2 innings and ending the contest with five strikeouts and no walks allowed to earn the multi-inning save.
Chapman added three hits in the nightcap, as well as three RBI and two runs scored to pace the offense. Kieran Theriot (Vicksburg) scored three runs and added three hits, including his first collegiate home run. Little and Murphy contributed with two hits as well.
Comer earned the win on the hill after three innings of work in a six inning, run-ruled affair. The Trojans received stellar relief from Blayne Clark (Water Valley) and Thomas Putnam (Inverness) in the second game.
MDCC vs. HINDS, 3/13/21
Delta traveled to Raymond at the conclusion of Spring Break and left empty handed, as the Eagles of Hinds grabbed a 15-0 win in game one and a 12-2 win in game two.
Chapman and Little had a hit apiece to help the offense in game one. Tanner Johnson (Richton) took the loss in the opener.
Theriot had two hits and an RBI in the second game, and Clark helped out with a hit and RBI as well. Luke was the losing pitcher of record in game two.
MDCC vs. COAHOMA, 3/10/21
The Trojans traveled to Clarksdale to face bitter rival Coahoma Community College on March 10 and after a heartbreaking, 11-inning loss by the score of 8-7 in game one, MDCC rebounded with a 7-4 win in game two to split the series.
Davon Mims (Vicksburg) had three hits, including a triple, and an RBI in game one to lead the charge. Chad Dudenhefer (Picayune) added three hits, three RBI and two runs scored, and Little aided with three hits of his own in the first one, but it wasn't quite enough.
Burge was unfortunately charged with the loss in game one, despite throwing 5.1 innings and striking out three hitters, while allowing only one run to cross.
Comer was the winner on the hill in game two after a complete game effort that saw him finish with six strikeouts and only four runs allowed.
Chapman and Murphy had two hits to help Comer's mound effort. Chapman scored two runs, while Murphy had two RBI.
UP NEXT
MDCC (3-11 in conference) heads to Wesson on Saturday at 2 p.m. for another Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) matchup. The Trojans will then head to Goodman on March 30 to face Holmes in a non-conference matchup that was postponed earlier in the season due to COVID-19 issues within the MDCC program.
