Wolves Win Two Midweek Games

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to action with three games over two days and picked up two wins. The Wolves swept the day against Hinds and Southwest with 11-4 and 5-1 wins respectively on Wednesday, February 26, and then dropped a game against Lansing, 4-2, on Thursday, February 27.

CO-LIN 11 HINDS 4

The game was scoreless until the Wolves plated two runs in the bottom of the third as Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) and Gavin Bledsoe (Brandon) hit back-to-back singles to put two runners on with one out. Griffin then scored as Reise Thomas (Florence) dropped a squeeze bunt and reached safely on the play while Bledsoe then scored as Tucker Jones (Brandon) hit into a fielder's choice giving the Wolves a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles then scored one run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead in half at 2-1. However, the Wolves responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning as Trey Davidson (Brandon) stepped up and crushed the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a leadoff solo home run making the score, 3-1. Later in the inning, Evan Holifield stepped in with two outs, took one swing of the bat, and smashed a 3-1 pitch over the fence in left field for a solo home run, his first of the season, and increased the lead to 4-1.

The Eagles then used back-to-back doubles to score a run and cut the lead down to 4-2 in the top of the fifth. The Eagles then looked to possibly tie the game in the top of the sixth as they put two runners on with two outs, but a diving grab by Donovan Moore (Bude) in left field brought the inning to a close with the lead maintained at 4-2 for the Wolves.

The Wolves then exploded for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning as Moore and Davidson hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Moore then scored on an RBI-double by Caleb Brooks (Brandon) increasing the lead to 5-2. Later in the inning, Holifield delivered a one-out, two-RBI single scoring Davidson and Brooks to push the lead to 7-2. Holifield then advanced to second on a passed ball, and took third on a single by Griffin while Bledsoe drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Holifield then scored as Thomas was hit-by-pitch while Griffin scored on a wild pitch increasing the lead to 9-2. The final two runs came on a two-RBI single by Moore scoring Wesson and Bledsoe to give the Wolves an 11-2 lead.

The Eagles then used a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to make the score, 11-4, but the Wolves then got three straight outs to secure the victory.

The Wolves totaled 12 hits as a team with Trey Davidson leading the way with three hits, while Donovan Moore, Evan Holifield, and Avery Griffin had two hits apiece with Reise Thomas, Caleb Brooks, and Gavin Bledsoe adding one hit each. Holifield led the Wolves in RBIs with three while Thomas and Moore had two RBIs apiece with Jones, Davidson, and Brooks adding one RBI each.

Jennings Kimbrell (Flowood) got the start for the Wolves and improved to 5-0 with the win while pitching six innings allowing two earned runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Lane Robertson (Columbia) pitched one inning of relief allowing two earned runs on one hit with one walk.

CO-LIN 5 SOUTHWEST 1

In the second game of the day, the Bears hit a one-out double followed by a single then a two-out RBI single to score a run and take a 1-0 lead over the Wolves. However, the lead was short-lived as the Wolves responded with three runs of their own as Tucker Jones drew a one-out walk to get the offense going. Jones then stole second and scored on an RBI single by Donovan Moore to tie the game at 1-1. Later in the inning, Dylan Wesson (Brandon) stepped up with two outs on the board, took one swing of the bat, and crushed a 2-1 pitch, over the left field fence for a two-run home run to give the Wolves a 3-1 lead.

The game stayed 3-1 with neither team being able to take advantage of scoring opportunities while the Bears looked to threaten to tie the game in the top of the fifth after a hit-by-pitch and a walk put two runners on with one out. However, the Wolves forced an inning ending double play to bring the potential rally to an end and maintain their 3-1 lead.

The Wolves then added their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth as Evan Holifield hit a leadoff single while Avery Griffin followed by drawing a walk to put two runners on with no outs. After the Wolves pulled a double steal, Holifield scored on an error on the play while Griffin then scored on an RBI single by Caleb Brooks increasing the lead to 5-1.

The Bears then got a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, but the Wolves responded with a groundout, strikeout, and groundout to end the game and secure the 5-1 victory.

The Wolves totaled six hits as Donovan Moore had the only multi-hit game with two while Dylan Wesson, Evan Holifield, Avery Griffin, and Caleb Brooks had one hit each. Wesson led the Wolves in RBIs with two while Moore and Brooks had one RBI each.

Parker Ishee (Ridgeland) got the start for the Wolves and improved to 3-1 on the season while pitching 4.1 innings and allowing one earned run on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Nash Sturdivant (Brandon) got his second save of the season while pitching 2.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing two hits with four strikeouts.

LANSING 4 CO-LIN 2

The Wolves looked to get on the board early in this game as they got two runners on with no outs in the bottom of the first. However, the Stars then forced a fielder's choice followed by a double play to keep the game scoreless.

The game stayed scoreless until the Stars plated three runs in the top of the third behind an RBI-double, and two-RBI single to take a 3-0 lead over the Wolves.

The Wolves looked to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth as they once again got the first two runners on with no outs, but a strikeout, caught stealing, and strikeout ended the inning with no scoring done as the Stars held their 3-0 lead.

The Stars used an RBI-double in the eighth inning to increase their lead to 4-0.

The Wolves then started their comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth as Tucker Jones hit a leadoff double to get the offense going. Later in the inning, Jones scored on a one-out, RBI double by Trey Davidson cutting the lead to 4-1. After Dylan Wesson reached base on an error, Davidson scored on an RBI single by Evan Holifield to cut the lead down to 4-2. However, the Stars then got back-to-back strikeouts to end the rally and seal the 4-2 win.

The Wolves totaled seven hits in the game as Tucker Jones and Evan Holifield had two hits apiece while Donovan Moore, Trey Davidson, and Dylan Wesson had one hit each. Davidson and Holifield had one RBI each for the Wolves.

Cohen Weinhofer (Ocean Springs) got the start (2-1) and pitched four innings allowing three runs, all earned, on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts while Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) pitched five innings of relief allowing one earned run on three hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 14-7 overall and will return to action hosting Nunez for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 1. First pitch between the Pelicans and the Wolves is set for 2 p.m., at Sullivan Field.
