No. 17 Bulldogs blast Bucks

HATTIESBURG — It took a while for No. 17 Mississippi Gulf Coast's first "home" game to get started, but it was worth the wait and the distance traveled.

The Bulldogs blanked Motlow State 3-0 at Tatum Park after the game was moved north because of wet field conditions at Perkinston. The game started more than an hour later than originally scheduled because a backup officiating crew had to be rounded up.

"We had a really good first half," Gulf Coast coach Jackie Rhodes said. "We're really happy with the win. It's a three-goal win against a Division I out-of-state opponent, so we'll take it."

Landu Mprioteli (So., Stuttgart, Germany/Robert Bosch Schule) got the night off to a great start in the 19th minute. Her shot from the right wing looped over the keeper's head and into the far side netting. It was the international's first collegiate goal.

Katie Brown (So., Picayune/Home School) followed 10 minutes later with another shot from outside the area. Her ninth career goal came from beyond the top of the box and made it 2-0.

The Bulldogs (1-1) killed the game off quickly in the second half. Leah Bennett (So., Cape Town, South Africa/Mondeor) blistered a cross into the top of the area, and Alyssa Palisi (So., Diamondhead/Hancock) controlled it and beat the keeper for her 12th goal during her Bulldogs career.

Gulf Coast closed out the shutout while rotating a lot of fresh players off the bench and maintaining control of the game over the Bucks (1-1).

"We are a possession-oriented team," Rhodes said. "We spend a lot of time working on that in practice, so it's nice to see all the things we've been working on. We've had a lot of time right now to work on it, so it's nice to see it come to fruition."

The Bulldogs' scrimmage for Monday at West Florida has been canceled because of Hurricane Ida. They'll play again Sept. 10 when MACCC play opens with a trip to Meridian.
