Bulldogs pull away for 24-point win

PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast closed out the 2024 portion of its men's basketball schedule with an easy 111-87 win over Piney Woods Post-Grad on Monday.

The Bulldogs (8-4) got 20 points from Matthew Hinton (Fr., Atlanta, Ga./Dutchtown), and four of his teammates finished in double digits at Dantzler Arena.

"We needed this," Gulf Coast coach Owen Miller said. "We needed some guys to see the ball go in. "Our bench played well, and Thomas (Tangle) played well and made some shots."

Tangle (So., Standing Pine/Choctaw Central) finished with 15 points. Aujaylen Barron (Fr., Gulfport/Harrison Central) had 14.

Gulf Coast went on a 9-2 run in the final two minutes of the first half to lead 51-42 at the break. The Bulldogs pulled away quickly coming out of the locker room, leading by as many as 25 points.

"Our halfcourt defense has got to get better," Miller said. "We've got a lot of improvement to go there. That's something we have to pay attention to going forward."

Avan Wilson (Fr., Bay St. Louis/Bay) and Kaue Kalinowski (So., Curitiba, Brazil/Divine Savior) had 12 points each.

Gulf Coast returns to action following the holidays with Jan. 7 game against the Louisiana Knights. Tipoff will be at 2 p.m. at Dantzler Arena.
