The Seahawks mounted a late-game comeback but it wasn't enough as Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College held on for an 11-6 win over LSCPA in the second day of the Chipola College Tournament.
The Seahawks fell behind 1-0 after the top of the first inning but a two-run bottom half put LSCPA back on top 2-1. Cameron Niedenthal slapped a two-out single to short and Savannah Trahan tripled her home to tie the game at 1-1. Kaitlyn Samarripa followed that with a double to plate Trahan for a 2-1 advantage.
Mississippi Gulf Coast tied the game with a run in the top of the second, adding two more in the third, fourth and sixth innings before the Seahawks could get back on the offensive upswing.
In the sixth, trailing 8-2, the Hawks added three runs to cut the lead to 8-5. Samarripa led off the sixth with a double and Celeste Salazar brought her home on a one-out single. Later in the inning, facing two outs, Salazar reached second on a passed ball with Riana Tovar's single putting runners at first and third.
Kayci Spittler earned a walk to load the bases. Maylin Louvier earned an RBI-single on the next at-bat to pull the Seahawks to within 8-5. Unfortunately, the next at-bat was a liner to short to end the bases-loaded threat.
The Bulldogs answered with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull MGCCC out to an 11-5 lead.
The Seahawks looked like they might put the pressure on again in the bottom half of the final stanza as they worked three straight walks to load the bases with one out. A ground-out accounted for an additional run but also meant the Hawks were loaded down with two outs. The next at-bat was a fly ball to center to end the game.
Samarripa had a pair of doubles in the game while Trahan had a double and a triple to lead the offense. Louvier, Niedenthal and Tovar all had two hits in the game as the Seahawks put together an 11-hit showing.
Niedenthal took the loss in the circle, allowing nine earned runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts and five walks.
