MOORHEAD – Jarius Sharp (Stephens, Ark.) hit two free throws with 0.3 seconds remaining to give the Mississippi Delta Community College men's basketball team a thrilling 53-52 win over Holmes Community College in Moorhead on Monday.
The win was the first of the season for the Trojans, and came at a perfect time after MDCC had suffered a series of hard-fought, close losses. It moved the team's overall record to 1-3 in 2021.
Sharp was the leading scorer for Delta on Monday, as he finished with 11 points. The sophomore forward was a perfect 4-4 from the floor and was 3-4 from the charity stripe, but it was the last two free throws that made the difference in the outcome. He also had two rebounds, one blocked shot and one steal.
Willie Eagins, Jr. (Jonestown) and Morgan Green (Greenville), both freshmen guards, had 10 points each in the win. Eagins, Jr. capped off a solid night with four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Green had two rebounds, two assists and two steals as well.
The Trojans traveled to Coahoma Community College on Thursday, Jan. 28, and fell at the hands of CCC, 58-52.
Chavis Banks (Yazoo City) was the high scorer for MDCC against the Tigers, as he had 15 points on 6-9 shooting from the floor and 2-3 from the free throw line. The sophomore forward also had 10 rebounds to complete the double-double.
Sharp pitched in with 11 points, while Eagins, Jr. had 10 points on the evening.
MDCC returns home on Thursday night, hosting Faith Prep (Ark.). Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at J.T. Hall Coliseum in Moorhead.
