No. 17 MGCCC drops doubleheader to No. 15 Pensacola State

No. 17 Mississippi Gulf Coast dropped a softball doubleheader at No. 15 Pensacola State on Wednesday, losing 6-3 and 7-5.

Gulf Coast trailed 3-0 after three in the first game, but rallied to tie it with an RBI single by Abbott Stafford (So., Glenmora, La./Glenmora) in the fourth and two in the sixth. Emaleigh Coates (So., Lucedale/George County) got down a squeeze bunt, and Stafford tied it up with a sacrifice fly.

Pensacola State got a two-out three-run homer in the sixth for the winning margin.

The Bulldogs got out to a 3-0 lead in the second game. K.K. Agner (So., Horn Lake/Magnolia Heights) had an RBI double in the first and scored on an error. Breanna Green (So., Saraland, Ala./Saraland) singled in another run in the second.

Pensacola State (18-2) scored four in the second and twice in the third, before Gulf Coast cut it to 6-5 with an RBI double by Jones, who scored following a steal and error.

Pensacola State added a run in the fifth, and Gulf Coast had a runner cut down at the plate to end the sixth.

Jones went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader with two doubles. Green had three hits.

Gulf Coast is 7-10, and the Bulldogs are back on the road March 12 to open MACCC play. They'll travel to Northeast Mississippi.
