MOORHEAD – Although it is Spring Break on the Mississippi Delta Community College campus, the athletic fields and courts are in full session. The MDCC baseball team is no exception, and will head to Clarksdale on Wednesday to take on Coahoma Community College for a noon doubleheader.
The Trojans have had a busy slate of late, and here is a recap of the latest contests in the midst of Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) play.
MDCC vs. JONES, 3/6/21
The Trojans traveled to Jones College on Saturday and dropped game one, 10-0, before falling 7-5 in game two.
Gage Little (Duck Hill), who is currently hitting .583 with 15 RBI in just 12 games, was 1-2 in the opener to lead the MDCC offense. Tanner Johnson (Richton) took the loss on the hill in game one.
Little had two hits and scored a run in game two, and was helped by Chad Dudenhefer (Picayune) and Julian Murphy (Ridgeland), The duo each added RBI singles, with Dudenhefer's scoring two runs. Haden Luke (Vicksburg) took the loss on the mound in Saturday's nightcap.
MDCC vs. ITAWAMBA, 3/2/21
MDCC was on the road in Fulton to take on Itawamba Community College on March 2, looking to come away with a victory or two. The Trojans came up just short, as they lost 7-2 in game one, before losing a heartbreaker, 7-6, in game two.
Little paced the way in the opener against the Indians, as he was the lone Delta hitter with multiple hits. The third-year outfielder was 2-3 with a double and two RBI. Luke Smith (Picayune) was charged with the loss on the mound, despite throwing six innings and striking out four ICC hitters.
In game two, the Trojans held a late lead, but were unable to secure the victory that resulted in a one-run loss. Landon Comer (Wellington, Ala.) was the pitcher of record for MDCC, and was dealt the loss despite throwing a complete game that saw him walk only two hitters and allow only four earned runs to cross the plate.
Kieran Theriot (Vicksburg) was 2-4 with a run scored, while Chad Stockstill (Picayune) had a double and two RBI to lead the MDCC offensive attack.
MDCC vs. MERIDIAN, 2/27/21
Delta opened up MACCC play at Meridian Community College on Feb. 27 in a doubleheader at Scaggs Field. MDCC fell in game one, 17-7, before dropping the nightcap, 8-4, to the Eagles.
Little was lights out offensively in the conference opener, finishing 4-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Eli Stallings (Boyle) finished 2-4 with a home run, run scored and RBI. Joshua Parker (Byram) took the game one loss for MDCC.
Luke had a courageous outing in the second game, as the freshman right-hander had seven strikeouts and no walks through five innings, but was dealt with the tough-luck loss. Little was yet again the big hitter, as he hit his second home run of the season and added three RBI in the process.
