WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Soccer team wrapped up the home portion of the 2024 regular season by hosting East Central on Friday, October 11. The Lady Wolves beat the Lady Warriors, 1-0, in a hard-fought defensive battle.
"This was a tough battle against an organized and resilient team," stated Co-Lin head coach Tom Cosgrave. "We kept putting them under pressure and eventually got the breakout and winning goal."
The first half saw neither team find the back of the net despite multiple scoring chances for each team including three shots on goal for the Lady Wolves by Nimue Cutrer (St. Martin). The Lady Wolves finished the first half with more scoring chances than the Lady Warriors but play ended in a scoreless draw as the horn sounded for halftime.
Despite the scoreless first half, the Lady Wolves continued to ramp up the pressure on the Lady Warriors. The offensive pressure by the Lady Wolves ultimately led to a goal in the 50th minute as the Lady Warriors had a deflection off a defender send the ball into the goal and give the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead. The Lady Wolves continued to find more scoring chances throughout the half but could not extend the lead while the defense stalled out the Lady Warriors attack for most of the second half to secure the 1-0 victory.
Olivia Conway (Huddersfield, England) saved all three shots on goal faced throughout the match.
"It wasn't the prettiest win but three points is never easy so we will take it and move on to the next match," added Cosgrave.
Co-Lin is now 3-3-3 overall, 3-2-2 in MACCC play, and will return to action on the road against Holmes on Tuesday, October 15. The action between the Lady Wolves and the No. 4 Lady Bulldogs is set to kickoff at 1 p.m., at the Ridgeland campus for Holmes.
