No. 12 MGCCC takes down No. 23 Hinds

No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast didn't just get a road MACCC women's tennis win Tuesday, the Bulldogs took down No. 23 Hinds 8-1 in Raymond. 

"Our doubles were really strong," Gulf Coast coach Sam Blackburn said. "No. 1 doubles had to overcome a deficit, which good to see them face some adversity and overcome it. The other two were pretty solid and straightforward wins. We started out really good, and I was excited to see that against a top-25 team."

Gulf Coast improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in MACCC play. Hinds is now 2-4, 1-2.

Danique Vermue (So., 's-Heerenhoek, Netherlands/Scheldemon College) and Valeria Callejo-Vivar (So., Madrid, Spain/I.E.S. Ortega y Gasset) edged out a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles.

Isona Arnaus (Fr., Barcelona, Spain/Centre Lopez Vicuna) and Lauren Sullivan (So., Laurel/Laurel Christian) dropped only one game at No. 2 doubles, and Dallas Tanner (So., Hattiesburg/Oak Grove) and Karla Bethea (So., Edwards/Homeschool) lost three.

Arnaus dominated at No. 3 singles, winning 6-0, 6-1.

"In singles, we were really solid," Blackburn said. "We faced some adversity there, too, because Lauren lost the first set. She battled back and played well after that. Carla battled all the way to the very end and almost one. There were a lot of positives out there today."

The Bulldogs will head to New Albany on Thursday to play an exhibition match against Blue Mountain College at 2 p.m. They play Northwest Mississippi the next morning at 10.
