Indians close out season with sweep of Mississippi Delta

Indians close out season with sweep of Mississippi Delta
FULTON, MS – The Indians closed out the regular season by sweeping Mississippi Delta in Tuesday, but the late surge wasn't enough to punch a postseason ticket.

Game 1: Indians 18 MS Delta 4 (7 innings)

Evan McCarthy hit a pair of home runs to help the Indians pick up an 18-4 victory in the first game of the day.

McCarthy launched both bombs in a wild third inning that saw the Indians erupt for nine runs. That inning included a two-run double from Reid Kent, a two-run single by Jude Treadaway, and a two-run shot off the bat of Stone Collier.

Houston Green added a two-run homer in the fifth to cap a 17-hit performance for the Indians.

Jarrett Morris went a perfect 3-for-3, while Treadaway drove in four runs on a pair of hits. On the mound, Brock Ware handled business with five strong innings, giving up just two runs on five hits to pick up the win.

Game 2: Indians 5 MS Delta 0

The Indians completed the sweep with a 5-0 shutout over the Trojans.

All five runs came in a decisive second inning, highlighted by Collier's two-run double, a McCarthy RBI single, and a sacrifice fly from Nathan Ferris.

That would be more than enough for Jud Files, who was dominant on the hill, tossing six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and just one walk. Files extended his modern-day record for most strikeouts in a single season to 108, the record dates back to the 2006 season.

Despite the sweep and a strong finish to the season, the Indians came up one game short and will miss the playoffs this season.

The Indians finished the season with a 26-22 overall record, including a 13-15 mark in conference play. They posted a 17-9 record at home. Coach Rick Collier picked up his 700th win as head coach of the Indians on April 18 in a 16-7 win over Hinds.

Treadaway led the team at the plate with a .374 batting average, 15 doubles, 6 home runs, 39 RBIs, and a .463 on-base percentage. Kent batted .371 while McCarthy hit .337 with 12 home runs, 41 RBIs, and a team-best .669 slugging percentage. Morris contributed a .333 average, while Collier added 35 RBIs and four home runs.

On the mound, Files led the staff with a 9-2 record, a 3.23 ERA, and 108 strikeouts over 69.2 innings. Brock Ware threw 61 innings and recorded 61 strikeouts. Dixon Webb posted a 2.08 ERA in six appearances, and Treadaway chipped in with a 1.50 ERA across six innings in relief.

The Indians hit .294 as a team with 44 home runs and 273 RBIs. They outpaced opponents in total bases, 650 to 507, and closed the year on a four-game winning streak.
