MOORHEAD – Due to incoming weekend weather, the Mississippi Delta Community College baseball team will now host the 2021 regular season finale on Monday at 1 p.m. in Moorhead versus Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. The two-game set was originally set for Saturday.
Here is the latest in Trojan baseball:
MDCC vs. NORTHEAST, 4/20
Delta hosted North division rival Northeast Mississippi Community College on Tuesday and came away with two thrilling wins in a doubleheader sweep of the Tigers.
MDCC held on to win game one, 15-14, before using a six-run seventh inning to come back and win game two, 8-6.
Landon Comer (Wellington, Ala.) was the winner on the mound in the opener after throwing six innings and allowing just three earned runs, while striking out four and not allowing a walk.
Davon Mims (Vicksburg) was on fire in the opener, finishing a perfect 5-5 with four RBI to lead the way. Gage Little (Duck Hill) and Eli Stallings (Boyle) each had three hits and a home run apiece to aid Mims, and Riggs Easterling (Shreveport, La.) and Julian Murphy (Ridgeland) each finished with two hits in the victory for the Trojans.
Haden Luke (Vicksburg) was his usual dominant self in game two, finishing with 12 strikeouts to just one walk. He was not credited with the decision, however, because the win went to Chase Logan (Holcomb), who threw a scoreless seventh inning and had two strikeouts.
The Trojans were down 6-2 going into the seventh and final frame, but scored six runs (including five with two outs) to cap off the miraculous comeback win. Easterling was the hero, as his three-run, walk-off home run provided the final blow and led the Trojans to victory.
Chad Dudenhefer (Picayune) had three hits in the second game, and was helped out by Carson Chapman (Flowood), Little and Murphy, who all had two hits.
MDCC vs. PEARL RIVER, 4/17
Delta (14-20 overall) traveled to Poplarville on Apr. 17 to take on Pearl River Community College and left with a 6-3 loss in game one and a 10-1 loss in game two.
Little had two hits, including a double, in game one. He was aided by Kieran Theriot (Vicksburg), who had two knocks as well.
Patrick Martin (Brandon) took the loss on the mound in game one. Luke Smith (Picayune) was stellar in relief of Martin to give the Trojans a fighting chance, as the freshman right-hander finished with five scoreless innings.
In the second game, the Trojans were paced by Chapman and Little on the offensive side, as Chapman had a hit and an RBI and Little added a double.
Casey Burge (Lumberton) was credited with the loss on the hill.
