Fulton, Miss. – Following the groundbreaking of the new softball and tennis complex, No. 17 Itawamba Community College softball wrapped up the exciting day with a sweep of Mississippi Delta Community College with a pair of run-rule victories.
Game 1: Indians 9, Trojans 0 (5 innings)
Three RBI performances from Haylee Alberson (Hernando) and Jessi Smith (Senatobia) and an impressive 10 strikeout performance by Emily Robinson (Springville, Ala.) gave the Indians (13-4) a 9-0 win in five innings to start the doubleheader.
Smith, who went 2-for-3, gave the Indians an early lead when she blasted a two-run home run to left field [video] in the bottom of the first inning.
Alberson extended the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third on a two-run scoring double. She would later score as Emma Rose Thompson (Hatley) reached on an error, and Thompson wrapped up the inning by scoring on a ground ball to put ICC up 6-0.
Smith struck again in the fourth with a RBI double and then scored the on a sacrifice fly by Rayne Rippee (Sardis). Riley Tyree (Trussville, Ala.) scored the game's final run as Alberson reached on an error.
Robinson improved to 7-2 as she allowed only one hit in five innings and striking out 10 [video] for the second time this season.
Game 2: Indians 8, Trojans 0 (6 innings)
The second game was scoreless through two and a half innings before the Indians offense got rolling to pick up the 8-0 win in six innings.
In the bottom of the third, the Indians scored the game's first run on a heads up base running play by Allie Beckley (Pontotoc) who scored from third when Smith drew a walk and took second base forcing the throw to second. Smith would later score when Thompson reached on an error.
Julia Shaw (Hernando), who went 2-for-3, doubled in a pair of runs to give ICC a 4-0 lead after four frames.
Avery Wolfe (Hernando) singled in a run in the fifth to stretch the lead out to 5-0, and in the sixth, the Indians took advantage of Trojans mistakes to take a 7-0 lead.
Hanna Grace Gillean (Mantachie) then ended the game with a double in the right field gap to give the Indians the 8-0 win and the sweep.
Hallie Turner (Southaven) picked up the win to improve to 2-0 as she allowed only one hit and struck out seven [video] in six innings.
The Indians will open conference play Saturday when they travel to Meridian to face the Eagles four a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at the Sammie Davidson Complex.
