Indians sweep Bevill State

Indians sweep Bevill State

Fulton, Miss. – Itawamba Community College baseball wrapped up the week picking up a sweep of Bevill State Community College on a pair of run-rule wins Saturday.

The Indians (10-3) opened the day with a 13-2 game one win in five innings, and completed the sweep with an 11-1 game two victory in five innings.

Game 1: Indians 13, Bears 2 (5-innings)

The top of the lineup started and finished game one strong with Drew Capobianco (Saltillo) and Matthew Martinolich (Ellisville) combining for five hits, three for extra bases, and three RBI [video].

In the first inning, the Indians plated four runs by taking advantage of two bases loaded walks, a hit batter with the bases loaded and a run-scoring single by Jackson Lee (Calhoun City).

Bevill State scored one run in the top of the second, but the Indians had another four-run frame in the bottom of the inning. Martinolich hit his second double in as many innings to score a run, and later scored on a wild pitch.

Eli Hancock (Houston) capped off the inning with a two-run scoring single to put the Indians up 8-1 after two innings.

After a bases loaded walk in the fourth, Walt Gardner (Pontotoc) singled to score two runs and put ICC up 11-1, and Capobianco added an insurance run for the run-rule on a single for his third hit of the game. Gardner scored the Indians final run of the game during a ground out.

The Bears pushed a run across in the top of the fifth, but the Indians were able to close out inning and the game to pick up the 13-2 run-rule win.

With all the run support, Brady Davis (Hamilton) picked up his second win of the season and kept the Bears off balance striking out seven [video] while only allowing four hits.

Game 2: Indians 11, Bears 1 (5-innings)

Unlike game one where the Indians scored their runs over three innings, they scored all of game two's runs not only in one inning, but in the first inning.

The Indians scored their first run as Capobianco score on a sacrifice fly by Will Verdung (Corinth) and a run scoring single by Lee extended it to 2-0. However, the next three runs would come off a free passes with the bases loaded.

Ben Davis (Booneville) scored on a passed ball to stretch the lead out to 6-0, and Verdung followed with a two-run scoring single.

Gray Bane (Olive Branch) made it a 9-0 game on a run scoring single, and Bo Rock (Amory) plated the final two runs of the opening frame on a single.

The Bears plated their only run in the top of the third as the Indians cruised to the win and the sweep.

On the mound, JW Armistead (Mooreville) improved to 3-0 by allowing only one hit, one run and striking out four in three and two thirds innings.

The Indians are scheduled to travel to Jackson Wednesday to face conference foes Mississippi Delta Community College and Jones College as part of a non-conference triple header. The Indians will face Mississippi Delta at Noon and Jones at 2:30 p.m. in Smith-Wills Stadium.
