PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast knew facing Holmes would be a tough task Tuesday night, but the Bulldogs stood toe-to-toe with the top team in the nation before falling 3-1 at Bary Thrash Field.
After giving up the game's first goal in the 50th minute, and another 12 minutes later, Gulf Coast kept applying pressure.
The Bulldogs got a breakthrough in the 75th minute when Kyla Smith (Fr., Hurley/East Central) delivered a bomb from outside the area. Elissa Viquez (Fr., St. Rose, La./Destrehan) slipped her in down the right wing to earn the assist.
Holmes would push their margin back to two goals in the 87th minute.
Gulf Coast is now 6-4-1 overall, 2-3-1 in MACCC play. The Bulldogs slipped two spots to eighth in the standings, but could move back up Friday. They'll play winless East Mississippi in Perkinston, with kickoff set for 5 p.m.
Sophomore Night ceremonies are scheduled to take place following the match.
