MACJC announces 2020 Academic All-State Honorees, All-Academic Teams
Jackson, Miss. - The Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) today announced their 2019-2020 Academic Award individual recipients and All-Academic Teams. More than 1,000 MACCC student-athletes were awarded Academic All-State or Distinguished All-State honors for academic excellence during the school year by the conference.
Honorees were awarded Distinguished All-State and All-Academic distinction in football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, golf, men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's soccer.
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College received the highest number of awardees of the MACCC's 15 member schools, with 45 student-athletes receiving Distinguished All-State Honors, and 59 receiving Academic All-State.
They were followed by Jones College, with 94 academic awardees, including 34 Distinguished All-State recipients and 50 All-Academic award recipients. Holmes Community College also finished the year with 79 awardees.
Rounding out the schools with the most honorees across all sports were Southwest Community College, which saw 80 student-athletes receive academic awards, Hinds Community College with 79 awardees, and Mississippi Delta and East Mississippi Community Colleges, with 75 awardees each.
Academic All-State honor recipients must have earned between a 3.25 and 3.79 on a 4.0 scale for a minimum of 24 cumulative hours. Distinguished Academic All-State distinction--the MACCC's highest academic honor--is reserved for student-athletes with a 3.8 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
"MACCC student-athletes are competitive on the court or field, and in the classroom," said MACCC Commissioner Steve B. Martin. "I couldn't be more proud of our student-athletes, coaches, athletic directors and academic advisers for their hard work this year, particularly in these difficult and challenging times. The continued academic excellence of our student-athletes is a testament to their grit, character and integrity."
The conference also recognized its All-Academic Teams of the Year, which is awarded annually to the team with the highest grade point average in a sport sponsored by the conference. Jones led all schools in All-Academic Team honorees with three. The Bobcats' women's soccer team, men's tennis team and football team all won MACCC All-Academic Team of the Year, with 3.72, 3.64 and 3.08 grade-point averages, respectively.
Mississippi Gulf Coast earned two All-Academic Team of the Year honors. The Bulldogs' softball and men's soccer teams earned 3.673 and 3.484 GPAs.
Itawamba Community College's baseball team garnered the 2019-2020 MACCC All-Academic Team of the Year for the sport, earning a team GPA of 3.456.
The women's basketball All-Academic Team of the Year honor was awarded to Northwest Community College, who finished the year with a 3.48 GPA. Southwest Community College earned the men's basketball All-Academic Team of the Year award, with a 3.52 team GPA.
The golf All-Academic Team award was earned by Northeast Community College. The team finished the year with a 3.46 GPA.
